St Lucia Children
The children of St. Lucia are
special to me. Having visited the island, I had the opportunity to travel with
two friends and Sister Margaret
a
Dominican Order Sister, whose mission is to help the people, especially the
kids, of this beautiful island.
Known for its sandy white beaches and clear, blue ocean, St. Lucia is a
vacationer's paradise. Lavish resorts hug the coastline,
providing their guests with exceptional food, drink, and atmosphere.
Traveling only a few blocks
from one of these resorts, I saw the real St. Lucia and the kids that live
there. Most of these children will never see
a computer, never text message their friends, or travel farther than the small
village they grow up in. As young children, they are full of life.
Quick to greet me with a smile and a "Can I see my picture?" they became my
friends immediately. I was most impressed with their
openness to me. Each one of them was polite, friendly, and full of life. One
look into their eyes and I fell in love with them.
My desire is to help these kids
through Sister Margaret's work. She is a tireless nun whose love for people,
especially children, is
so needed on this island. Having the privilege of being driven around the
island in Sister Margaret's car, I saw people and scenes that
those who take cruise ships never see. I saw houses that were smaller than what
we call storage sheds, and people doing their best to live in
these shacks. Never again will I look at life the same. Through Sister
Margaret's generous hospitality, my heart was touched by the opportunity
available
to help the people on this island.
